Berkeley Opera
presents Giuseppe Verdi's Aïda
Conducted by Jonathan Khuner, Directed by Yuval Sharon

Berkeley Opera puts its unique imprint on Aïda, the grandest of Verdi's operas. This supremely popular work is usually staged with lavish excesses, but in our production's intimate setting we will focus on the inner drama of the main characters, relying upon the deep force of this timeless tale of captors and captives trapped in a vortex of politics and passion. Released from the trappings of Egyptian dynastic ritual and clichˇd operatic tableaus, the production will highlight the acting of real characters as well as the intensity of Verdi's music. Expect the unexpected, as this unconventional production provides a springboard to a powerful realization of this popular masterpiece. In Italian with English supertitles.

Berkeley Opera presents
Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet

Berkeley Opera will recreate the composer's original intent with this production of Gounod's Romeo and Juliet. Instead of a through-composed opera, in this production the recitatives are replaced with Shakespeare's spoken prose. With the contrast between spoken and sung sections, the result will be a greater narrative coherence, sustaining momentum and adding theatrical variety. Rather than a period 19th century French Romantic opera, Berkeley Opera offers an evening of Shakespearean strength and vitality.
