What. A. Year. Isn't it time for a little comedy to lighten the mood? Here-r-r-s Will! The Year End Big Fat Kiss Off Comedy Show stars the funniest living political comic on the face of the planet, Will Durst. It also stars Jim Short, winner of the 2004 SF International stand-up comedy competition. Durst and Company provide an evening of hilarity, lampooning the events that comprised 2004. The show involves stand-up comedy, improvisation and loosely-written sketches. This is a live show that is sometimes spontaneous and some language may not be suitable for the sensitive, the easily offended or the weak of heart.

Berkeley Ballet Theater
presents The Nutcracker

Berkeley Ballet Theater's The Nutcracker presents a fresh retelling of this favorite holiday story, with Berkeley Ballet students joined by seven guest artists in,the male leads. These talented dancers include Brian Fisher and Private Freeman of ODC, Eddie Stegge of Diablo Ballet, David Bier of the San Francisco Opera Ballet, Bryan Ketron of Liss Fain Dance, Carlo Sierras of the Mark Foringer Project and Christopher Dolder, choreographer and director of Bay Area Repertory Dance. The leading roles of Clara, the Snow Queen, and the Sugar Plum Fairy will be performed by dancers from Berkeley Ballet's Youth Company. Choreography is by Sally Streets, winner of the 2003 Isadora Duncan Award for Lifetime Achievement, and Robert Nichols.

Jeni Maier reads Grace Paley's humorous take on the perplexities of assimilation in the tale of a Jewish girl cast as the lead in her school's Christmas play.

Mahea Uchiyama Center for International Dance
presents Tatau

KaUaTuahine Polynesian Dance Company and Hui Tama Nui share the stage for "Tatau," (tattoo) an evening of Polynesian dance and music. Both groups perform nationally and internationally, winning numerous awares. In 2002 KaUaTuahine Polynesian Dance Company, part of Mahea Uchiyama, traveled to Tahiti to study and perform with one of Tahiti's preeminent dance ensembles, Orihere Maohi. This performance celebrates the release of Mahea Uchiyama's new CD "Tatau," a result of the collaboration between the two groups. It captures authentic compositions of traditional Polynesian music available for sale at the performance For its part, Hui Tama Nui's drummers recently won the San Jose Tahiti Fete first place Senior Division Drumming and the dancers won frist place Group Otea Junior Division in the San Jose Fete.

Joshua had a very difficult time in the hospital, and now, against all odds, he is home with his family. present Thanksgiving Rock
with very special guest Asheba

The Sippy Cups, a pop-rock band whose motto is "Milk, Music and Mischief," play cool tunes for kids of all ages. They will have you and your kids dancing in the aisles! Kids play along with the band on stage while circus acts -- juggling, unicycling, tricycling, and plate-spinning feats -- are woven throughout the music. Songs are drawn from artists including The Beatles, The Ramones, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens and T.Rex and audience interaction by parents and kids is central to the show. Opening the show will be Asheba, the Carribbean children's musical storyteller, the perfect kids artist and an authentic world music entertainer. His CDs include "Go Itsy", "No More Monkeys" and the upcoming "Alphabet Story." The Sippy Cups are led by lead singer and keyboardist Paul Godwin, the Director of Music Together of San Francisco, a school that has taught some 3,000 Bay Area families how to make music with their children.

present "Elections are Coming! Elections are Coming!"

Shake off those election eve jitters and enjoy some lively short stories read by actors under the direction of Beth Donohue Templeton. Readings include "The President's New Clothes" by Anne Ursu. What would happen if the President switched bodies with a ten-year old boy? Would the nation continue to function? Would anyone even notice? Read by Chris Paulina. Other humorous pieces, all from The New Yorker, include: Paul Rudnick's "Running Mates," in which secret loves can be exciting, but when the love is between two powerful political figures, stakes run high; Patricia Marx's "The Undecided," which asks, "have we seen enough of the presidential candidates to really base our votes on fact?;" and, Christopher Buckley's "Rules of Engagement," which looks at the real rules behind the Presidential debates to find out what the news will never tell you.

California Revels blend music, dance and ritual to create a celebratory and unique form of music theater. This year's Holiday Revels draw on the traditions of 18th century Scotland. Mike Vax Jazz Orchestra, with special guest artist saxophonist Eric Marienthal, and musicians from big bands led by jazz greats such as Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Cab Calloway among others, promotes jazz for new generations of fans. Leader Mike Vax graduated from Oakland High School in 1960 and went on to become first trumpet, soloist and road manager of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He led the Dukes of Dixieland in New Orleans, and has performed workshops and concerts at high schools, colleges and universities all over the world. MVJO promotes the importance of the jazz heritage in America, brings jazz music to young people and offers audiences a relaxed and entertaining musical experience. The MVJO has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Filoli Mansion Concert Series, Yoshi's and Kimball's.

Decriminalization of Prostitution Seminar

A timely day-long seminar on the negative implications of decriminalizing prostitution, proposed for adoption in Berkeley. Most people intuitively understand the harm of prostitution, but are confused about what to do about it. Learn how prostitution violates human rights, and the negative consequences of decriminalization on poor girls and women.

Comprised of immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union, the King David String Ensemble is made up of musicians who perform with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. Led by their conductor, Anita Kamien, the ensemble has performed in venues as diverse as the Sala Barozzi in Milan to the King of Thailand's birthday party. "America at War"

Co-sponsored by the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts and the Berkeley City Club, "America at War" presents actors reading works of literature and actual letters. George McCrae will read from Tim O'Brien's elegiac story of an army company's first casualty in Vietnam, "The Things They Carried." It reveals the burden soldiers carry during wartime, not only in ammunition and equipment, but in confusion, terror, memory, guilt and grief.

Betty Grandis will read selected letters from Andrew Carroll's book, "War Letters," an extraordinary compilation of actual correspondence from the Civil War to the Persian Gulf war, recently made into a PBS special. This reading focuses on the compelling, humourous, heartbreaking letters women wrote during these wars. Free. Bring a friend!

Julia Morgan Center for the Arts with the Lincoln Center Institute for Arts in Education present a week-long exploration for artists, teachers, administrators and parents that places the arts squarely in the center of school curriculum, classrooms, and communities. Participants explore works of art in theater and dance through the hands-on process of art-making, guided inquiry, reflection, and research of their social, historical, and cultural contexts.

"Quills," directed by Shotgun company member Reid Davis, cackles fiendishly at the self-righteous gatekeepers of morality, tweaking innocent and not-so-innocent ears. Witty, ironic, shocking and lyrical, "Quills," is a highly theatrical exploration of love and art and the responsibility of self-expression.

with Renowned Author Daniel Judah Sklar

Daniel Judah Sklar, renowned author of Playmaking: Children Writing and Performing Their Own Plays, will be coming to Berkeley for a one day intensive workshop for teachers and teaching artists in his effective method for tapping individual creativity for people of all ages.

This workshop is presented by the Julia Morgan as part of their relationship with TAO (Teaching Artists Organized), a collaboration between Theatre Bay Area, the Julia Morgan, California Shakes, Berkeley Rep and the Community Network for Youth Development. TAO hosts monthly professional development opportunities for teaching artists working with youth in school and community settings.

More than 50 students ages 7 through 18 will present dances from the ancient dance form, Bharata Natyam, the classical dance of South India. The dancers will tell stories of Hindu mythology through hand gestures (mudras), drama (abhinaya), and rhythymic movement (nryta). Most of the dances were choreographed by the late renowned T. Balasaraswati in the tradition of the South Indian Tanjore Court.
