Shotgun Players present
Mother Courage and her Children

Generally recognized as one of Bertolt Brecht's greatest, Mother Courage and her Children joins the list of plays Shotgun has produced in the last two years that poke and prod the causes, justifications and results of war. Live music performed from an original score supports the comic irony of this powerful epic.

When asked what he wanted his audiences to walk away from in a production of Mother Courage and her Children, Brecht stated, "That war is a continuation of business by other means, making human virtues fatal even to those who exercise them. That no sacrifice is too great for the struggle against war." Note: Content may not be suitable for all children.

First Annual International Clitoris Celebration
Featuring talented musicians, dancers, and drummers

Sia Amma, with her sly humor and strong convictions, will be joined by dancers, singers and drummers in a fundraiser by Global Women Intact to benefit refugee women and children between the borders of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, West Africa. The petite Sia Amma uses her glowing smile and wit to raise funds and awareness about refugees caught up in Sierra Leone's decade-long civil war, in which Sierra Leonean women faced particular brutality. The war left tens of thousands dead and forced more than one million Sierra Leoneans to flee their homes. Today, traumatized refugee women and children face extraordinary hurdles as they return home to rebuild their lives in a country destroyed by war, where their rights are not guaranteed and where crimes against women continue at a high rate, including the practice of clitorectomy, the cruel and dangerous traditional cutting of a girl's genitals.

Chaim Potok's first book, "The Chosen," is one of the most celebrated American Jewish novels of the twentieth century and one of the first American novels to evoke the world of Hasidic mysticism. Two generations of American Jews have had their sense of identity shaped by this story of two boys growing up in Brooklyn in the 1940s, sharing their passions for Torah and baseball, caught in the aftershocks of their fathers' religious conflict. The supple and intense stage adaptation by Potok and Aaron Posner has been generating passionate audience response in Washington, DC, Phoenix and Los Angeles. Now A Traveling Jewish Theatre brings it to Berkeley audiences for a special run at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts.
