The Berkeley Opera presents
CARMEN

The opening night audience booed!
Critics declared it morally repulsive! This story of the passion between a Gypsy who lives and loves by her own rules and a soldier hiding from a violent past shocked Paris with its frank sexual psychology and its refusal to pass judgment on its characters -- in an era when gypsies were despised and condemned throughout Europe.

Bizet died just months later, and his opera was revised by other hands. Many lines were dropped or rewritten, simplifying the characters and obscuring their motives. José became an innocent victim, Carmen a capricious and diabolical femme fatale.

But the opera Bizet wrote, like the novella it was based on, tells a different story. Two headstrong people, two incompatible cultures. Two people who fall in love and yet cannot understand each other. This new adaptation by David Scott Marley (The Riot Grrrl on Mars, Beatrice and Benedick) returns to Bizet's original conception, and will change how you think about opera's most fascinating female.

This musical traces the unpredictable line between autobiography and fantasy. The story centers around Gordon Schwinn who dreams of writing an epic musical about his life but instead writes songs for a twisted children's show called "Mr. Bungee's Aquatic Circus." "A New Brain" succeeds in illustrating the impact the characters in our life have on our own evolution.
Music and lyrics by William Finn. Book by James Lapine and William Finn. Directed by Yuval Sharon.

THE EMPYREAN ENSEMBLE
East Coast/West Coast

In the final concert of their 200-01 season, Julia Morgan Center for the Arts resident Empyrean Ensemble is joined by internationally renowned soprano Susan Narucki and Pulitzer prize winning composer Mario Davidovsky in the world premiere of Davidovsky's "Cantione Sine Textu." In addition, the ensemble will perform works by Andrew Imbrie, Morton Feldman and Ross Bauer.

Founded by composer Ross Bauer, who continues as its co-director, Empyrean Ensemble consists of a core of five of California's finest professional musicians, augmented as needed to make possible the performance of a wide chamber music repertoire. Joining him this season as co-director is composer-conductor Yu-Hui Chang. With a dual emphasis on music written within the last ten years by a wide range of prominent American composers - much of it specifically composed for the ensemble - and on informed and exciting performances of 20th century classics by composers such as Ravel, Varese, Debussy, Copland, Rachmaninoff, Bartók, and others, the ensemble's mission is "to provide compelling performances of the best new American music presented in the context of its twentieth century antecedents."

The instrumentalists of Empyrean Ensemble include Tod Brody, flutes, Peter Josheff, clarinets, Terrie Baune, violin, Ellen Ruth Rose, viola, and Thalia Moore, cello. Joining the ensemble as guests for these performances are guitarist Michael Goldberg, percussionists Daniel Kennedy and Ken Piascik, pianists Eric Zivian and Karen Rosenak, oboist Barbara Midney, cellist Dana Putnam, and bassist Tom Derthick.

MOZAIK, PHARAOH'S DAUGHTER and THE PUPPET PLAYERS present
New Moon at Sinai
An Evening of New Jewish Music and Theatre

This evening will fill the senses; awakening the mind, moving the body and enlightening the spirit. Through live puppet theatre, shadows and images the evening will travel from Egypt to Mount Sinai. The stories, songs and music will tell the story of transformation from slavery to community, from darkness to light.

Pharaoh's Daughter is 6 piece band from NYC on Knitting Factory Records. They are part of a radical NYC scene of new Jewsih music. Led by Basya Schechter this band sold out their performance at the Berkeley Jewish Music Festival this winter. Basya's songs combine Hasidic melodies and songs with Middle Eastern melodies and instruments and stories of reflection about the world today. Mozaik is a 12 piece band that sounds like a cross between Shlomo Carlebach, John Coltrane and The Grateful Dead. This band started their own genre called Psychedelic JewGrass. It has been said, " Mozaik can make a grandmother dance on a table and a teenager scream for more!" The Puppet Players are a multi-media, musical, and ritual theatre group. Their shows are masterfully produced to thrill people of all ages with hand made sets and puppets. They incorporate all original music, live action theatre, hand puppets, masks, shadow puppets and slides to involve the audience in a multi-sensory experience. They will be delivering deep puppet teachings.

Odissi Dance
Featuring Manoranjan Pradhan and Asako Takami

Odissi is one of the seven main forms of Indian classical dance and reputedly the most lyrical of the seven, with its emphasis on liquidity of movement and graceful expression. Rooted in the rligion and customs of the eastern Indian state of Orissa, some forms of Odissi date back to the second century BCE. The Odissi tradition nearly became extinct but was revived in the 1950s. The sources for this revival were temple sculptures, palm-leaf manuscripts and Mahari dance, ritual dance performed by women at the temple of Jagannath.

The Berkeley Opera presents
The Marriage of Figaro

Beaumarchais's notorious comedy thumbed its nose at the decadence of the nobility - and was such a hit that it helped spark a revolution in Paris and was banned by nervous rulers all across Europe.

This adaptation, by musicologists Sherwood Dudley and Miriam Ellis, is modeled on an actual production at the Paris Opera shortly after the Revolution, supervised by Beaumarchais himself. It restores much of Beaumarchais's original dialogue to the story, and puts back the satire and subversion that delighted and scandalized a continent!
