The Dunsmuir Scottish Dancers

The Dunsmuir Scottish Dancers perform dances that represent the history of Scotland including the Scottish wars, stories of freedom and tales of superstition and repression. The Julia Morgan Masters Series begins with fifty dancers and musicians celebrating the first day of the next millenium. This Troupe is Y2K prepared to share Scotlands finest moments. Leave your computers at home and come celebrate with us!

This event celebrates the 300th anniversary of the publication of Corelli's elegant violin sonatas dated January 1, 1700.

Handel, Bach, and Biber will also be featured.

Christopher Weldon, Piano

The Julliard-trained Weldon has won a number of international and national piano competitions. He will perform the music of Scriabin, Beethoven, Scarlatti, Copland, and Chopin.

Sonorous String Quartet

During their many years together, the Moscow Conservatory-trained Arlekin String Quartet have toured exstensively through out Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Dueling Pianos

Jerry Kuderna and Vera Breheda

 

Jerry and Vera's program will consist of Debussy's En Blanc et Noir, Stravinsky's Concerto for 2 Solo Pianos, and the Suite No.2 by Rachmaninoff.

Kick Up Your Heels

Ladies Oratorical Society

Through Song, Dance, and Stories, this all female group recaptures the excitement and escapades of saloon hall girls during California's Gold Rush days.


Spontaneous Combustion

Melody, Poetry, and Rythm swirl together in an improvised program featuring Diane Grubbe on flutes, Raven with Trance Poetry and Jimmy Nakagawa on Taiko Drums.

Sounds of Scotland

Featuring gaelic and English vocals, guitar, citole, recorders, whistle, Scottish smallpipes, Celtic harp, and stepdancing, Distance Oakes is "among the best Scottish bands in America today."

Spanish pianist Eduardo Ponce is joined by his wife, German pianist Heidi Hase for an exhilerating afternoon of piano wizardry. Music by composers Joaquin Rodrigo, Imanol Baganeta, Jose Maria, Garcia Lagborda, and more.

Brisas de Espana brings the passion of Flamenco and Classical Spanish Dancing to The Julia Morgan Theater. Eduardo Ponce will perform The Iberia Suite by Isaac Albeniz on Piano.

Pianist Ann Teresa Kang will play selected works by Ravel, and Faure. She was recently featured on the Grand Piano series on PBS, and has won competitions sponsored by the Music Teachers Association of California.

Monica Scott, Cello

Scott completed her training at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. in this performance of The Six Suites for Violoncello Solo by J.S.Bach she will play an eighteenth century German cello.

Talent and Beauty

Pianist Allison Lovejoy received her training at The San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Royal Academy of music in London. Her program consists of pieces by bach, Rachmaninoff, Haydn, Bartok, Bizet, Barber, and Stravinsky.

Prolific Pianist

Englishman Pianist Anthony Peebles has performed in an astonishing 119 countries around the globe. He will perform selected pieces by Schubert, Beethoven, Scott Joplin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and Frederick Loewe.

Niall Fordyce, Classical Guitar

Fordyce received his Masters in Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied with guitar heavyweights David Tannenbaum and Elliot Fisk. He will play a collection of pieces by various Latin composers, and an original compostion.

Masters Of Music Gala Extravaganza

Featuring Gwendolyn Mok, piano; Carla Wilson, bassoon,;Roger Wiesmeyer, oboe; Terri Baume, violin; Thalia Moore, cello; Members of the San Francisco Opera Chorus performing pieces from Strauss, Beethoven, Ravel, and Gershwin.

Sunny Strings

Formed in 1992, The Del Sol String Quartet has performed throughout the Western United States and Canada. This event will feature the music of Lutoslawski, Piazzolla, and Brahms.

Harpist Cheryl Fulton is America's premier performer on historical harps and a "genuine virtuoso of her instrument."

She will perform a selection of medieval and baroque music.

Eclectic Solo Piano

When Pianist Sarah Cahill is not performing pieces that expose "odd but fertile corners of the American musical psyche," (Village Voice), she hosts a weekly music show on KPFA that was named one of the Hundred best Things In The Bay Area by City Search online magazine. Her program features a selection of eclectic pieces by modern composers.

This Berkeley-based a capella chamber chorus, Madrigal Vox Populi is composed of local music directors, musicologists, professional singers and instrumentalists. This event will feature spiritual and sensual music of the Italian Renaissance.

Best Night in January For a Date in Berkeley!

 

Jumping Jazz Trio

The Fernando Benadon Trio, composed of U.C. Berkeley PhD candidates, will perform selections by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, and Herbie Hancock.

 

Classical Young Lions

The U.C. Berkeley Classical Music Group undergrads will play a Hindesmith quartet and a Brahms sextet. This group of 8 string players combine academics and pleasure to round off an excellent evening of music.

Killer B's: Bach, Brahms, Beethoven!

The son of Russian immigrants, Pianist Lawrence Perelman studied piano at the prestigious Manhatten School of Music and Macalester College in Saint Paul. In addition to performing, Perelman heads up the International Association of Young Artists, an organization dedicated to raising the profile of classical music in the media. he will play pieces by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, and Johannes Brahms.

Haunting Gypsy Music

Danubis ("The Puxata Home Companion") and Lautari Matraguna ("The Gypsy Heirs") perform music of the Gypsies, Rembetes and Romani Tarafs, from Bucharest to Macedonia. The Nightwood Band present music and dance from Eastern Europe on their native instruments.

Innovation and Imagination

Urs Steiner, Conductor

In it's short history, the San Francisco Sinfonietta Orchestra has earned a reputation as an innovative ensemble with the highest musical standards. Maestro Steiner is internationally renowned as a conductor, guitarist, educator and composer. The group will perform four Haydn symphonies.
